OPEN COMPETITION, HONORABLE MENTION 2017

description

This proposal was a competition entry for the design of an extension to the University of Iceland’s oldest student dormitory, located just outside Reykjavík’s old city centre. The task was to enlarge the old dormitory with a new type of student housing, wherein each student had a private bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, but shared all other facilities – the kitchen, dining room, living room, etc. – with 11 other individuals.

The new extension pays respect to the old building by remaining one storey lower than it. The extension consists of three wings on two levels that together form a U-shaped building. Technically each wing is self-sufficient, with bedrooms and a communal kitchen and living room connected to a large balcony overlooking a courtyard filled with greenery. However, the house is designed as one big home with a few communal rooms spread throughout the building, to avoid each wing becoming too isolated from the others.

The building is made of prefabricated cross-laminated timber elements in both exterior and interior walls, as well as in the ceilings and floors. The exterior walls are clad with zinc panels similar to those on the roof of the old building. The base of the building is made from concrete and the roof is covered with turf.
